Western has beaten Northwest, 49-14.

Leslie tops Northwest, 40-7

Leslie has beaten Northwest, 40-7, according to the Jackson Citizen Patriot and MLive.

The Mounties had an early 7-6 lead but the Blackhawks ran away with the game from there, according to the Cit Pat story.

Northwest falls to 1-7 on the season while Leslie improves to 7-1.

The Mounties close out the season at home next Friday against Western.

Tonight's game was the first matchup between Northwest and Leslie since 1972. And the Blackhawks broke a series tie, now leading it six games to five.

The two schools first played each other in 1959, with the Mounties winning that one, 10-7.

Charlotte pounds Northwest, 62-6

Charlotte beat Northwest tonight, 62-6, according to MLive and the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

The Cit Pat reported that the running clock was started before the first quarter ended.

The 56-point loss is the worst of the season for the Mounties (Lansing Waverly beat them 53-0 last week in the team's worst shutout-loss in history).

Tonight's loss, however, is not the worst ever for the Mounties.

In 2003, Charlotte beat Northwest by a 58-point margin, 66-8, which by my count currently stands as the worst loss in school history.

Next week, the Mounties (1-6) face a very tough Leslie Blackhawks team.

What went wrong?

Given the state of the Northwest football team, I'm not sure anybody is even checking this blog.

But if you are and you have any idea what's plaguing the team this year, please share in the comments section. I'd love to know.

I understand the team is young but after that season-opening win at Jackson High, it sure looked like they were capable of doing some damage this year, especially with the softer schedule. Granted, J-High is only 1-5 this season but, still, for Northwest to beat them in overtime at Withington was huge.

Now, the Mounties are staring down the barrel of another 1-8 season and the prospect of their first loss to Western (which is currently 4-2, coming off a victory over Columbia Central, which drubbed the Mounties) since 2002.

Is it the team's youth? Were there injuries? How did the wheels come off this season? And what can be done to start building for 2012?

Lansing Waverly blanks Northwest, 53-0

Lansing Waverly beat Northwest on Friday by a score of 53-0, according to the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

The Cit-Pat reported that it was the Mounties' worst loss since Charlotte beat them 66-8 in 2003.

And just Northwest's luck, they head to Charlotte next Friday.

The Mounties, which opened the season with a memorable overtime win at Jackson High, have now lost five straight and are 1-5.

Eaton Rapids beats Northwest, 14-6

The Mounties fell to the Eaton Rapids Greyhounds Friday night at a home by a score of 14-6.

Here's the Jackson Citizen Patriot/MLive story.

Northwest is now 1-4 this season.

Massey picks Columbia by 3 over Northwest

The Massey Ratings computer, which predicted Jackson High would beat Northwest by two touchdowns, is saying Columbia Central will beat Northwest, 31-28.

Massey now ranks the Mounties No. 311 in the state, up from No. 366 before the overtime victory over J-High. Meanwhile, it ranks Columbia No. 344.

Perhaps the computer gives extra weight to the home team, which is Columbia, in making its prediction.

Columbia Central (0-1) dropped its season-opener to Grass Lake, 26-22.

Mike Pryson lists Northwest-Columbia Central game as one to watch this week

Jackson Citizen Patriot sports writer Mike Pryson has picked Thursday's game between Northwest and Columbia Central as one of the Top 5 games in the Jackson area to watch this week.

See his story here.

Pryson notes that this is the first matchup between the Mounties and the Golden Eagles since 1995. Columbia Central won that game, 20-13.

The Mounties lead the series, which dates back to 1968, 14-7. (See Rivals Archive).

The schools played eight straight games between 1968-75, with Northwest winning every matchup.

After an eight-year hiatus, the teams met again in 1984, with Columbia winning 37-15. In the second stretch, the schools played 13 straight from 1984 to 1995, with Columbia winning seven games to Northwest's six.

Here's to another long stretch of games between Northwest and Columbia Central.

Will the Mounties' notably weaker schedule help them in 2011?

Going into the season, it appears there are two story lines (at least from afar): Northwest's lack of seniors and a schedule that is considerably weaker than in years' past.

The shortage of senior talent may hurt the team in the first few games but could bode well for the future as younger players gain more experience.

The softer schedule (thanks to a switch to the Capital Area Activities Conference's Gold Division, from the Red) could also help boost their confidence and build toward a much stronger team in 2012.

Only three teams on the Mounties' 2011 schedule had winning records a year ago: Mason (9-2), Leslie (6-4) and Cheboygan (5-4).

And notably absent are teams that went 9-0, 8-1 and 7-2 in the 2010 regular season: Lansing Catholic, Lansing Sexton and St. Johns, respectively.

But the group of younger players won't get to ease into their varsity careers. They kick off Friday at the premier venue in the county: Withington Stadium, against Jackson High.

Massey ranks Northwest No. 366 pre-season; predicts Jackson High win

Massey Ratings has Northwest selected No. 366 in the state pre-season, one slot behind Gull Lake and one in front of Union City.

Three teams on the Mounties' schedule are rated below Northwest: Western (478), Charlotte (481) and Eaton Rapids (541).

The highest-ranked team on the schedule is Mason at No. 32. (See the list here).

Friday's season-opening opponent, Jackson High, is ranked No. 267. The computer predicts the Vikings will win 28-14.

Season opener vs. Jackson High will be broadcast live

Friday's season opener between Northwest and Jackson High will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1450, the sports arm of WKHM.

It is the only Northwest game the station plans to broadcast this season. (See the schedule here).

The Mounties and Vikings will square off at Withington Stadium on Friday night.

Jackson High went 3-6 last year, including a 35-20 over Northwest. (See the Jackson Citizen Patriot's preview of J-High here).

Western Panthers to join Jackson Northwest in Capital Area Activities Conference

I'm admittedly a bit slow on the draw here but for those who haven't seen it, Western has been approved to join Northwest in the Capital Area Activities Conference, according to the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

Read the Cit-Pat story here.

According to the story, the Panthers become a member of the league in 2012-13.

For Northwest, the move is a bit of a twist since in 2010 the Mounties were looking to join Western in the Southern Michigan Activities Association. (read that Cit-Pat story here).

Either way, the long time rivals and bordering school districts will once again be in the same conference.

Mounties to face old rivals in CAAC realignment

A realignment of the Capital Area Activities Conference will put Jackson Northwest in the CAAC Gold division, according to a story in the Jackson Citizen Patriot (www.mlive.com/jackson)

The Mounties will no longer be in the same division as St. Johns, Owosso and Lansing Sexton.

Instead, Northwest will group with Mason, Lansing Waverly, Eaton Rapids, Charlotte and Lumen Christi.

The Titans, however, will continue to play football in a different conference.

Next to Western, Eaton Rapids is the team the Mounties have faced the most over the years (24 times, with the Greyhounds holding a 14-10 advantage).

Northwest has played Charlotte 16 times, winning just two of those match-ups.

The Cit-Pat also reports that the Mounties are seeking admission to the Southern Michigan Activities Association, which the paper first reported about in January 2010.

The SMAA, according to MLive's High School Sports site, includes for football: Western, Columbia Central, Leslie, Albion, Hillsdale and Stockbridge.

However, Northwest is unlikely to gain entry into the SMAA for 2011-12, the Cit-Pat reports, without a second school also joining the conference.
